Fifi is going to school

The sun was shining as if it were the middle of the summer holidays. But unfortunately, 1st September knocked on the door. Fifi was very excited. For the first time she was going to school. She was pleased with the beautiful school bag, coloured pencils and notebooks. However, she’d prefer to go to the lake with her friends rather than to school. The school was located under a big oak tree. Pupils were just slowly gathering and mistress Tekla, the wisest owl in the whole forest, was welcoming everybody.

‘Fifi!’ called Pufa and Fufa.
‘Here you are’, Fifi heaved a sigh of relief. ‘I was afraid, you wouldn’t come.’
‘We’re all here’, purred the cat.
‘So it won’t be so bad’, Fifi clapped he hands.
‘School is never bad’, the teacher joined the conversation. ‘And now sit down at your desks. Let’s start.’

Gramatyka: Present simple - to be

Czasownik to be (być) ma w czasie present simple różne formy odmiany w zależności od liczby i osoby. I tak np. zwracając się do Pufy i Fufy, Fifi mówi „Here you are.” Natomiast mówiąc o szkole, pani Tekla wypowiada zdanie: „School is never bad.” W tych przykładach are odnosi się do 2. osoby liczby mnogiej, a is do 3. osoby liczby pojedynczej. W języku mówionym formy czasownika to be bardzo często skracają się i łączą z zaimkiem osobowym, tak jak w zdaniu „We’re all here”. Taka ściągnięta forma po angielsku nosi nazwę contraction.
